The principle of the unidirectionally permeable membrane is mainly based on the large difference in the diameters of water droplets and water vapor molecules.The smallest diameter of water droplets is about 20 microns, while the diameter of water vapor molecules is only about 0.0004 microns.Because of this large difference in diameter, water vapor can pass through the microporous membrane, while liquid water or water droplets cannot pass through because of their surface tension, thus preventing water penetration.

In addition, some unidirectional breathable membranes are made of polyethylene resin, which can be stretched and crystallized under certain conditions.During the stretching process, the interface between the polymer and the calcium carbonate particles is stripped to form interconnected pores or channels, which endow the film with the function of ventilation (moisture) and communicate the environment on both sides of the film.

Unidirectional gas permeable membranes are usually made of special polymer materials with extremely fine microporous structures on their surfaces.These micropores can discharge indoor water vapor and prevent outdoor water droplets from entering the room through the film, so they have good waterproofness and air permeability.
